Information Assurance and Security
Faculty and staff working in the area of Information Assurance and Security (IA&S) collaborate with stakeholders from industry, governmental agencies, and academia to conduct basic research and develop cross-campus undergraduate and graduate educational programs. UW IA&S research strives to identify, address, and promote interdisciplinary solutions and act as a catalyst for innovation and increased public awareness.

Since the inception of the Internet, intruder attack tools have evolved from individually managed elements to automated, distributed, and flexible command/control structures with improved stealth, survivability, and reliability. BotNets—collections of software robots which run autonomously and automatically—are similarly evolving. This research examines BotNet evolution, with a focus on likely improvements in infrastructure and first-responder tools needed to detect and mitigate the next generation BotNet threat, particularly peer-to-peer BotNets.
